Winnie Pearl, adopted at age 12, this summer |
It is almost the end of 2014 and wow what a year it has been
for the pets in our area! And I can tell
you that 2015 will be even more amazing when our new building, Center for Pets,
opens up and we have started some of our cool new programs.
I received a note recently from a wonderful supporter and he
said, “…we owe you a debt of gratitude for helping to assure an atmosphere in
our area where pets have the status of family members”. Of course, this meant a lot to me but what I
would say is that the people in this community are the real heroes in assuring
that pets are cared for regardless if they are in a home or not. YOU.
You made it possible for…:
over 1,700 pets to find new homes this
year
41% more of our tiny kittens to be
saved by fostering and becoming Kitten Warriors
to reach 40,000 animals being fixed at our spay/neuter clinic since we
opened in 2006
over 6,000 spay/neuter surgeries
this year
the lives of 368 dogs and cats from
surrounding pounds to be saved
a legacy/endowment fund to be
established after receiving a number of large bequests this year. This will help set the Lynchburg Humane
Society pets up for future success.
success in our Summer of 1,000
lives where 728 pets found new homes, 348 more than last summer. Since November 1st, 314 pets have
found homes, over 130 more than last year. We
increased adoptions by 72% over last year
us to save and help MORE! We have taken in over 2,300 pets this year
which is about 800 more dogs and cats coming through our doors.
94% of the pets to be saved this
year compared to 91% last year and that is with more pets.
Wow you must be tired.
I will leave you with one story of the 1,000s we have each
year. KC was a 6 year old cat that came
to us in 2011 seized from a home in the city.
After 3 bouts of medical treatment and 3 years of waiting and being
overlooked year after year because she just wasn’t the cutest or the
friendliest… KC found the right home just in time for the holidays. KC is the perfect story to highlight that
sometimes all these pets need is time and love.
You made that possible.
So on we go to our new Center for Pets where we will expand
our operations and programs. We are
hoping to be open for business in February.
As much as we have changed in the last 5 years going from saving 49% to
94%, we are about to change even more, quickly and often, which is our new
internal motto. We will bring with us
the knowledge we have developed over the years but we will be learning and
evolving further to save even more pets and affect more positive change in our
community. 2015 is going to be one
fascinating year. The year where everyone
finds happiness!
