Become a Kitten Warrior!

Kittens are dying at an alarming rate.  We have one more spring/summer in the terrible environment of this old shelter and this year we are going to be diligent about getting kittens out of this environment.  We are calling all homes with an extra bathroom, basement, guest room, laundry room; any place a kitten or a litter can live until they are vaccinated and ready to get adopted.   Last year 134 kittens lost their lives in our shelter because of the poor condition of this building.  We are done with this. When people drop off stray kittens, they think they are better off here when they just aren’t.  Rusted surfaces, poor air handling and crowded conditions, coupled with poor immune systems = dying kittens.  A lot of shelters would not publicize they are seeing a lot of kittens die but with Panleuk, a deadly disease so prevalent in our community and the poor conditions in our shelter, we are being transparent about this because we need your help....

Owners are helping us save lives by waiting.

This community has been overwhelmingly supportive of our organization and the work we are doing to save lives.   That includes our appointment system for owned animals.   We take owned animals in by appointment so we can ensure that no animal will be euthanized because we don’t have space.   We are providing a service that helps make certain their pet will be safe here until it finds a new home. We have to take them in right away because the public is irresponsible.   So let us address the fears so our community will have the right answers and perhaps some of their fears can be alleviated. 1. People will a...

IS LHS UNDER ATTACK?

In 2013 the Lynchburg Humane Society (LHS) ended the year with a 92% save rate for the animals in our care, the highest year end figure since we began down the path to No Kill.   We were able to reduce the number of cats we took in by 294, compared to 2012, due primarily, we believe, to our spay/neuter efforts.   YOU made this possible.    We believe the Lynchburg Humane Society is about to be embroiled in a controversial attack by another humane organization because of all the great work we are doing.   We want our community and our supporters to know why and to be informed about this controversy because without you we could not do what we are doing.   You all are partners in our efforts.     This is long so please hang in there and read it in its entirety because there is important information throughout that you probably don’t know.    In April PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) sent us a letter askin...
